Sons of Sawdust
Furniture made of entirely reclaimed wood? That’s right! Three brothers in Athens, Georgia, took a passion and a family tradition to create a unique company called Sons of Sawdust. So what exactly is “reclaimed” wood? Reclaimed means that it comes from old buildings that are being torn down. They will save things like roof rafters, floor joists, etc. that are then cut and shaped into new furniture. Sons of Sawdust also uses salvaged wood from trees cut down for construction or fallen trees caused by bad storms. The brothers use a specific type of heart pine that is found in longleaf pine trees. This is an extremely rare type that is mostly found in reclaimed wood. It is scarce now because it is mostly found in the South which was where lots of clear-cutting took place in the 1800s. Don’t even ask where they collect it from though, because that is one of their trade secrets! From a variety of tables, book shelves, wall art, to even iPod stands made of wood; Sons of Sawdust has a lot of unique items for sale made from their reclaimed pine. Everything is hand-built by the brothers and the first cut on everything is with their Grandfather’s old saw, in honor of the man who taught them about building quality furniture and wood items. These “Sons of Sawdust” have found a quality approach to carry on the true craftsman legacy of their family.
