The Lyric is a storied theatre in Lexington, Kentucky. Also known as The Lyric Theatre and Cultural Arts Center, this venue is a nonprofit, city-owned, multi-use arts and performance space.
They are in the midst of refocusing their efforts to reflect The Lyric's history using custom shaped stickers. Their goal is to use their legacy brand and single-word identification of "The Lyric" to open up conversations and consciousness in the community. The sticker they printed up has the theater marquee design and their custom retro font of the Lyric logo in red. During the ‘50s Jazz, Soul and R&B music was the dominant style, and legends like Ray Charles, Count Basie and B.B. King graced the stage at the Lyric. This famous venue gets the star treatment with a bold use of shape, color and design.
Opened in 1948 as a cultural mecca in Lexington's segregated African-American community, the Lyric closed in 1963. Then in 2010, the Urban County Council of Lexington allotted $6 million to revive and reopen the theater under a new mission as a center for art, community, history, and education. The renovated building seats 540 in its theater and now includes an African-American culture museum, rotating gallery, courtyard, and 325-capacity multi-purpose room.
Rooted in its African-American heritage, the Lyric focuses on community development in Lexington's East End. With rotating exhibits in the Gallery & Museum, The Lyric is able to highlight the talents of local, regional and national artists, all free of charge for the public to view and enjoy.
The mission of the Lyric Theatre is "to preserve, promote, present and celebrate diverse cultures with special emphasis on African-American cultural heritage through artistic presentations of the highest quality, educational programming and outreach, film, and opportunities for community inclusion."
This story and the background on the theater comes to us from Donald Mason, who is currently the Director at the Lyric. He ordered from StickerGiant when he was in a band Soul Funkin Dangerous that we wrote about on the blog. "StickerGiant helped push my old band to new heights with the use of stickers to spread brand awareness," says Mason. "I wanted the same thing for the Lyric as we try to elevate our historic brand and update for today's fans of culture in Lexington."
