What are Celtic Knots? Celtic Knots are a type of stylized graphical representations of knots used by the ancient Celts for ornamentation. These knots were also used for decorating Christian places and writings like the 8th century St. Teilo Gospels, the Book of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels.
The first use of knots appear to be architectural decorations in floors and patterns common in the late Roman Empire. Although the use of interlaced knot patterns are commonly found in Byzantine architecture and books, Coptic, Celtic and Islamic art. Endless knots also appear in Ethiopian and Tibetan artwork as well. The actual origin of these designs may never be known.
Many meanings of these knots have been proposed, and many of the proposed meanings may be correct. The endless nature of the knot may symbolize the endless cycle of life and death. The complexity of the knot may symbolize the complexity and interdependence of the natural world. The Tibetans made knots like these to symbolized the inter-twining of wisdom and compassion.
